In 2008, my friend, Heather, started the website Start Seeing Black Dogs, as a resource for rescues and shelters to get and give information about “Black Dog Syndrome” and how to increase their adoption rates. Summed up, Black Dog Syndrome refers to the low adoption and high euthanasia rates of black dogs in shelters. I was honored to photograph Heather and her black dogs {and one chocolate dog} for People Pets a couple of weeks ago. Check out the article here. If you know of any shelters {or anyone!} who could use some of the free marketing provided by startseeingblackdogs.com, please pass the site along, and let’s get more black dogs adopted!

marissa - I have read about black dog syndrome. It is even harder on the big black dogs like the ones in your picture, because they have two things going against them…they are big AND black. I have a big gray dog and a lot of people are very intimidated by her even though she is the sweetest thing in the world. thank you for sharing this great story.February 14, 2010 – 9:04 pm

Kimberly - I’ve heard about this and think it’s ridiculous. I love black dogs and plan to adopt at least one when we have more property.
Wonderful program.
