scoop the poop :: minneapolis parks and rec :: clean water campaign

For the second year in a row, I’ve had the pleasure of working with the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board on a campaign about the importance of picking up after your dog. Improperly disposed-of waste (from the 100,000+ dogs that live in the Twin Cities) contaminates our lakes and rivers, leading to fish kills, algae blooms and water that’s unsafe for swimming. Far too many people do not pick up after their dogs in their own yards, on walks and while using off-leash recreation areas. The idea behind the campaign is to catch people’s attention, educate them about the problem, and encourage them to “Scoop the Poop.” This year they wanted to show a variety of real people with dogs out around town, with “bags of poop.” (We may have faked the poop for the benefit of our volunteers) You can find these up at kiosks in the Minneapolis parks system, inside Metro Transit buses and the light rail. I designed the posters and I may be biased, but I think they’re pretty great  :)

I meant to blog this a long time ago, but things got away from me and I sort of forgot. Then yesterday, I was riding the bus to pick up my car from getting new brakes, and I was very excited to see one my posters out in the real world! Which kicked my butt into gear to post this blog for your viewing pleasure.

And here’s an iPhone image of the one on the bus!
