I’m excited to feature Greyhound Pets of America (GPA) of Minnesota as my June Rescue of the Month! I first learned about GPA when one of my good friends adopted a Greyhound (Stella) from them in 2008. (Stella was then featured on the December 2009 cover of MN Monthly) These days, GPA is using many of my photos in their banners, billboards and ads, and they’re so great to work with!
GPA is an all-volunteer run, foster-based rescue, founded in 1987 for the purpose of finding homes for ex-racing greyhounds and educating the public on the suitability and availability of greyhounds as pets. They thoroughly evaluate each of their fosters, testing for compatibility with smaller pets, and matching potential adopters with their perfect houndy friend. To date, they’ve rescued and re-homed over 1400 retired racers. They hold meet and greets at Urbanimal and PETCOs around the Twin Cities. Each Sunday, GPA members get together to walk their hounds around Lake Como or Lake Harriet.
This coming Saturday, June 9th, they’re having their 16th Annual Greyfest – a day of fun, camaraderie, a silent auction, food, contests, games, vendors, photos and hounds. Everyone is welcome to attend this FREE event at the MN State Fairgrounds, regardless of your hound-owning status. I’ll be photographing Speed Alley from 10:30 to 1:00, a straight-line run for one hound at a time, and – the best part – they’ll be recording how fast each one goes with a radar speed-gun :)
“Good Ol’ Brett” came into the studio today for his Rescue of the Month photos. He’s strikingly handsome, mild-mannered and loves toys.
If you’d like to learn more about GPA, volunteering, donating or fostering, be sure to check out their website and Facebook page. I hope to see you on Saturday at Greyfest!
