gertie + dixie = besties

Gertie’s mom got a pet photography session for her birthday, and they were both super excited! She’s a yellow lab (mix?) and LOVES tennis balls. Her BFF Dixie dropped by toward the end to get some photos of her own, and some together. These girls are two peas in a pod, and it’s amazing how similar they look. She’s lighter than Gertie, and has something in her heritage that gives her a fluffy, upturned tail, but other than that, they may as well be sisters. It was fabulous meeting these lovely ladies, and we got some awesome images….. please enjoy:

leo in the studio

Leo’s dad won a session through a Can Do Canines silent auction. (formerly Hearing and Service Dogs of MN) Leo is big, lovey English Lab, and he did great in the studio! They wanted some of the more non-traditional colors, so we busted out the orange, and the always-fabulous “standing on the surface of the sun” yellow. Isn’t he handsome?

LOVE this one…… Me? Oh, I’m just chillin.

gryphon :: joy session

I had another beautiful Golden Retriever for a Joy Session last week. Gryphon is 12 years old and just got diagnosed with Lymphoma. His little brother, Hobbes, is 10 and still doing well. I was surprised at their coats, they’re both much lighter-colored than any Golden I’ve come across, and their fur gets really curly on the ends. Their mom said they’re from Canada and some breeders up there breed for this specific light coat. It’s really pretty.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…. the love that people have for their pets runs so deep it can be overwhelming. I often get asked if my Joy Sessions are hard to do, and while they can be emotional, I really, really love to do them. It brings purpose to what I do, and healing to the families who are losing one of their own.

So here’s my favorites from Gryphon’s session. He wasn’t getting around too well, he either stood in his pool (he loves to dig in his pool!) or laid on the grass, but he definitely made for some beautiful images. Thank you Gryphon.

Call for Models Winners Announced!

Holy cow. That’s all I have to say….. Holy cow. When I put out the call for models, I was expecting maybe 20 to 25 people would respond, I’d pick my 12 or so, and it would be easy peasy. You guys really stepped up for this, and I got over 140 submissions!! Whoa! There were SOO many great dogs to choose from, I had to bring in help to cull it down. I limited it to 12, simply for time and cost involved on my part, but I seriously would love to photograph each and every one. A ginormous thanks to everyone who submitted!

It was so great reading all of your funny stories, your pet’s quirks, activities, likes and dislikes. Some photos made me laugh out loud, some made me go “awwwww,” but they were all fantastic! It’s overwhelming sometimes how much we love our pets, so thank you for sharing little pieces of that love with me.

Keep in mind that my choices were made purely by my personal aesthetic and what I’m envisioning for this project. It took a LONG time to pick just these few, but I’m really excited about them! It’s such an eclectic mix, which is exactly what I was hoping for, so thank you for that. Without further adieu, I present the winners!

Saturday proved to be another beautiful day and another super fun K9 Connection Beer With Your Buddy! Bring me your dogs! I’m working on a special photography project, and I need your help. I’m looking for dogs in and around the Minneapolis / Saint Paul area to come to the SBP studio and be a part of this super fun {yet-to-be-revealed-semi-secret} idea.

**UPDATE** I previously said the submission deadline was Sunday, May 23rd, but I’ve moved it up to a week from today, on Tuesday, May 18th. Keep the ball moving and whatnot

“So, Sarah, what’s in it for me?” Well…. in exchange for bringing your dog to the studio, {at no charge to you} letting me style and shoot how I want, you will get:

A FREE 8×10 of your choice from the shoot
40% off a regular session {if you want…. no obligation!}
Your dog’s portrait inclusion in a hanging show and possibly other merchandise
An awesomely fun time

“But, Sarah, there’s always a catch though, right?” Right. So, nothing personal, but not every dog who applies will be chosen for this project. I’m looking for about 10-15 models, and choices will be made on my own aesthetic and what I want included in the show. Also, the session will not be like a client session, it will be comprised only of what I’m striving for in this particular project.

“So, Sarah, what *DO* you want?” Well…. I want dogs that are unusual, with character, with charm, with personality! With a unique look, whether it’s fabulous, elegant, curmudgeonly, or crazy! The more anthropomorphic, the better! I do ask that the models have basic skills like sit/stay, and are tolerant of objects on/around them.

There are certain breeds that I would really really love to have for this project, but please don’t feel limited by this list. And if you know of someone who has one of these breeds, PLEASE pass the info along to them!

Anything Hairless
Standard Poodle (traditionally groomed)
Afghan Hound
Chinese Crested
Borzoi
Ibizan
Shar Pei
Italian Greyhound
Bulldog
Anything white that’s not supposed to be (mutation)

“So, Sarah, how do I get to be a part of this amazingly fun opportunity?” Well….. all you have to do is send me an email! Please tell me a bit about your dog and attach a photo so I can assess “the look.” If you’re not sure your dog is a right fit, send it anyway! I won’t know what will work until I see it.

This pretty, mixed-breed girl came to the studio last week and got 20% off just for being rescued from Pet Haven! She’s a super good dog, and mostly just wanted to lay down and get belly rubs from mom :)

You can kind of see the black spots on her tongue in this one….

And, of course, the frog-leg bum-shot….

If you’re anything like me, you love two things…. dogs and beer! I’m happy to announce that this year’s first K9 Connection Beer With Your Buddy event is happing tomorrow at the Nomad Pub! This special pre-season BWYB is from 4-6:30, raffle prize tickets will benefit Homeward Bound Rescue, and it’s currently sold out at indoor capacity. If it doesn’t rain {cross your fingers!} there will be tickets available at the door. And if it IS raining and you can’t make it, don’t worry, this is just the first of many!

I’m very excited to be *the* photographer for K9 Connection! Look for me at many of their other great events, including the upcoming Wine and Wag to benefit Homeward Bound Rescue. I’ve decided to do the event photos a bit differently this year. All the images will go in an online gallery, and web-friendly, watermarked files can be downloaded for FREE! Prints will always be available for purchase, but I wanted everyone to have a little something extra. AND, all K9 Connection event attendees can purchase a full session with me for 15% off…. is this awesome or what!

If you’re at an event and you notice I haven’t photographed your dog yet, don’t be afraid to flag me down! These events can get a little crazy, and I want to make sure I get everyone at least once!

barney + nika + coco

Barney and Coco’s mom is opening a new grooming salon in Minneapolis, and they’re very excited! Barney is the handsome old mystery breed boy. He looks and feels like a very small Newfoundland mixed with a Spaniel or something….. who knows. Coco is the fabulous chocolaty Siamese, and their friend Nika the beautiful Malamute got in on the fun, too. They were all very well behaved and made for great models. I’ll be sure to give their mom a shout out when her new place opens!
