I got to try out yet another fabulous color with Hailey the other day! This green/yellow goodness is yummy like key lime pie and split pea soup. Or something else this color that sounds better than split pea soup……

Wheatens are famously cute and soft and bouncy and Hailey was no exception. She was a great model, and we got some gorgeous images!

sushi with your poochie :: part deux

Tiger Sushi 2 in Uptown will once again be home to Sushi with your Poochie. Huge thanks to Sidewalk Dog for putting it all together, and working so hard to make it better than ever! This time around, it’s two nights with less people, and will most definitely be super fun! I’ll be there photographing the fabulous event, and we’re very excited for a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Minnesota Spay Neuter Assistance Program (MNSNAP). Here’s some fun images from last year, and all the info you’ll need is at the bottom.

Last year’s event was a great success considering it was the first doggie/sushi party the Twin Cities has ever seen! This year, we’ve worked out the kinks to make sure everything runs like a well-oiled fun machine. Here are some highlights to look forward to:

The sushi artists at Tiger Sushi 2 have offered to hand roll special dog-friendly maki sushi for our four-legged friends!
A very insightful “paw reader” will be on hand to inform you what lies ahead in your pet’s future.
You’ve got two chances to attend—the event will be held on both Tuesday, July 20th and Wednesday, July 21st. So if one night conflicts with your golf game, don’t sweat it. Plus, each night will be less crowded and more fully staffed than last year.
In addition to being able to order off Tiger Sushi’s amazing happy hour menu, which the restaurant is offering for the entire event, you can purchase ready-to-eat boxed sushi from a table on TS2′s beautiful patio.
A small portion of ticket proceeds, paw readings and martini sales will go to our fabulous beneficiary, Minnesota Spay Neuter Assistance Program (MNSNAP), which provides low-cost spay and neuter services in a mobile surgical unit. MNSNAP will also receive part of the proceeds from all paw readings and $1 from each of Tiger Sushi’s fabulous martinis (Ninja Jinga or or Pomegranate Empress, anyone?) sold that night. On-site donations are also encouraged.

I love my job. How many people get to to hang out with a Basenji, a Toyger and a Box Turtle as part of a day’s work? Their dad is a veterinarian, and all three are rescues (go rescues!) Tanuki is the handsome Basenji, who’s a bit timid around strangers, but made for some great images. Red is a Toyger cat. I had to look up exactly what a Toyger might be, and it’s kind of interesting. (that website isn’t very up to date, as they’re speculating on where the breed might be in 2010) They’ve only been in development since the 1980′s, and recognized as a new breed in 2006. Essentially, they’re domestics cats bred to look like toy tigers. They’re pretty rare, and they’re not sure how Red ended up in a Humane Society, but his dad was happy to take him. He’s super soft and friendly, and a big talker!

Turtle the Box Turtle wanted little to do with his photo session, so I captured his signature “get out of my face” look.

Milou’s mom described him as a “blonde border collie” so I had an idea of what he might look like, but I did not expect such a gorgeous boy to come traipsing into the studio! He’s very unique looking and FULL of energy, and I had a great time photographing him. He wouldn’t really settle down, so his enormous tongue was lolling in most of the photos, which I think just adds to his charm. Here’s my faves of Milou’s fabulous photos…..

This last one cracks me up…. usually when I make my little whistley-squeaky noises, it gets the dogs’ attention and they close their mouths. Milou pretty much did, but just could never seem to get that crazy tongue all the way inside :)

Friends Caitlin of Spinario Mid-Century Modern Design, and Stephanie of American Guitar and Band and Stephanie Lake Design, invited me over to take some photos of their “kids!” Cait’s kitties and Stephanie’s Pugs were great models. Stephanie’s house was fabulous, and we even adorned the pups in some of her jewelry designs. Be sure to check out their respective shops, some of the best in the Twin Cities!

The pet industry here in Minneapolis is fantastic. So many great businesses and business owners, and many of us just mesh so well together, you can’t help but collaborate on projects! I first met Pampered Pooch Playground on Halloween of 2008, when I asked if I could photograph their party. Apparently they thought I might be crazy until they saw the images. (which you can see here on my *old* old, old, very first blog ever, started in 2006….. don’t laugh, at least I’ve come a long way)

Since then, I’ve hung work at their Doggie Daycare, we’ve shared booths at events, helped create ideas like the Twin Cities Puppy Bowl, and this coming weekend, we’ll be doing a “Doggy Style Photo Booth” at Gay Pride! (the website’s not up quite yet, though) So, when owners Keith and Trycia asked me to photograph their staff, it was a no-brainer. You’ll have to look on their website for the actual human staff (not yet, but coming soon… what’s with all these teaser-links??) but in the meantime, here’s some of the awesome dogs that “work” at PPP.

These have actually inspired a new project that’s now rattling around in my brain….. Upside-Dogs! I better focus on Style Hounds for now, but keep an eye out for more Upside-Dogs in the future….

Our good friends at Bone Adventure Pet Gear and Grooming have generously offered space at their northeast location to host a photography show by yours truly. We’ve been talking about doing something like this for over a year, and now the timing is right, and we couldn’t be more excited!

I could of just printed some of my existing work and it would have been fine, but of course I wanted to do something different and perhaps more spectacular. The style and general feel of this series is not what I normally do, but I’ve had the idea in my head for a while, and am definitely open to shooting client sessions in this style. You may remember my call for models last month, and the crazy good response you all gave me! I had over 140 applicants for my little project, and it was really great to see so much support. I arbitrarily chose my favorites of the bunch, and we headed over to Spinario Mid-Century Modern Design to set up shoots. Each model had their own styled setting with vintage furniture and accessories. The dogs were unbelievably good…. I wasn’t expecting them all to to be so cooperative, but it was great!

So the photos are done, the prints are ordered, and the postcards are out. It’s been a really short timeline, but it was good to push me to get it all done. The images will be up at the NE Bone Adventure (312 E Hennepin Ave) from next Saturday, June 26th, through July 31st. I’ll be at the store on Sunday, June 27th from about 10am – 1pm for an informal reception during the NE Pedal Pub Races (something hilarious and awesome that you NEED to check out), and again on Friday, July 30th during the NE Dog Parade. (time TBD)

scoop the poop!

Late last year, I was asked to team up with the Minneapolis Parks Department on a campaign to get more people to take responsibility and pick up their dog’s poop. We live in the City of Lakes, and there are over 100,000 dogs that live here with us. According to the Park and Recreation Board, “Dog owner decisions to pick up – or not pick up – after their pet, directly impacts the health (and beauty) of our water bodies. In fact, dog waste has been declared a “nonpoint source of pollution” by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Believe it or not, this puts dog waste in the same category as oil and toxic chemicals!”

They did a contest for people to enter a fun or funny reason why you should scoop the poop, and the winner’s dogs got to be on the posters! Sidewalk Dog handled promotion, Pampered Pooch provided the space, and Stunt Puppy provided gear for the dogs. It was super fun, and the project has finally come to fruition! The posters are printed and you can see them up around the Minneapolis parks system, at kiosks and dog parks. You can find more information on the campaign, and the Canines for Clean Water Summer Movie Series on their website here. You can even print your own posters to put up in your neighborhood! (the Pug might be my favorite)

henry :: almost famous

Our friends at Sidewalk Dog (THE place to go for all things dog-related!) do this fun piece on “Almost Famous Dogs.” They get the dish on local celeb’s furry friends, and lately, I’ve had a chance to photograph them! I got to meet the lovely Twin Cities Live host, Elizabeth Ries and her fab little Westie, Henry, at Cupcake in St. Paul. (which is delicious and awesome) Elizabeth is so personable and sweet, and Henry is just the same. You can read the Sidewalk Dog blog post here, and check out a couple fun images from our shoot:

gertie + dixie = besties

Gertie’s mom got a pet photography session for her birthday, and they were both super excited! She’s a yellow lab (mix?) and LOVES tennis balls. Her BFF Dixie dropped by toward the end to get some photos of her own, and some together. These girls are two peas in a pod, and it’s amazing how similar they look. She’s lighter than Gertie, and has something in her heritage that gives her a fluffy, upturned tail, but other than that, they may as well be sisters. It was fabulous meeting these lovely ladies, and we got some awesome images….. please enjoy:
