Chunk. When she told me his name, I immediately pictured a hefty Bulldog, or a rotund Pug. Turns out he’s a little Chihuahua Shih Tzu mix, and he looks like a lion. An honest-to-goodness, miniature lion. How can you not love that??

July’s Sushi with your Poochie events were such a fabulous success, that we just had to do one more! Another huge thanks to Sidewalk Dog and Tiger Sushi for putting these together….. I, for one, always have a blast!

And who says photos are supposed to be in focus??

These gals are Ladybug and Fern. Their mom makes killer cute dog coats…..

….. and clearly they all love sushi :)

ari + clara + bellah :: minneapolis pet photography

These three lovely ladies were super well behaved and so fun to photograph. Ari (pronounced “Aerie”) the Miniature Schnauzer is still looking good at 16! This sweet old girl doesn’t do much, can’t hear or see very well, but she’s healthy, loves treats and loves her mom. Her younger counterparts are Clara, the Mini Schnauzer / Poodle mix (or “Schnoodle” if you will) with the crazy hair, and Bellah the beautiful Rat Terrier. This first photo of Bellah is a new favorite:

jasper :: joy session

Handsome Jasper. We first met last summer at Scoopy Poo, then again this past March. Each time I see him he’s a bit more grey, but is always full of wiggles and headrubs. Sometimes it’s like he doesn’t even know he has cancer. The week after our session, they found his tumor had increased in size, his joints were stiffer, and he wasn’t very interested in food. But he wasn’t done yet! He got to come to Sushi with your Poochie with his dad on Wednesday, and I thought he looked pretty good. It sounds like they’re going to try one more kind of treatment, and then it’s just a matter of time.

Jasper’s dad started a beautiful blog about him, and his story has been picked up by Petopia, All Dog Blog, The Happy Wag, and even Bark Magazine. It’s become a way for them to cope with what’s going on, and to help others who might be going through the same thing.

As I was editing these photos, I had a smile on my face pretty much the entire time. Mostly happy, some sad, but all coupled with a full heart knowing just how loved this wonderful dog has been. I can feel it emanating from the images. I wanted to share with you something his dad wrote to me after viewing their photos for the first time. It made me cry and I dare you not to tear up as well:

“…as I was looking through the photos a thought crossed my mind. I’d never really seen photos of Veronika and I with Jasper (quite like this), and I dare say that the images show how much we really do love him and have cared for him. Knowing this actually comforts me and makes me feel like it will be OK to say good-bye because we’ve loved him so much. Thank you.”

The look on his face in this one cracks me up.

lilah :: 10 months

Ok, I’m no expert on babies, but I’m pretty sure that Lilah is the most beautiful baby that ever existed. She’s seriously cute, and I can’t get over her giant blue eyes. (If I ever have kids, {and that’s a big “if”…. maybe part of the 5-year plan} they’ll most likely have boring old brown ones…. I savor the blues whenever I can) Lilah is the lovely daughter of the mastermind behind Secondhand Hounds; a really great foster-based rescues here in the Twin Cities. They tempt me almost daily with their dogs that need fosters, but alas, I just can’t foster right now. I’m hoping to integrate that into the 5-year plan as well.

This amazing outfit was a gift from a family friend in France…. handmade in Paris!

And this dress was her mom’s when she was roughly the same age :)

The grandparents have a pool, which was super fun for both Lilah and the pups!

griffin + morgan :: corgi friends

You may remember Griffin from my call for models a few months back. He was a great model for the project (which I need to blog soon) and he and his big (but smaller) sister, Morgan, were super fun to photograph in their regular photo session! Morgan is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and Griffin is a Cardigan Welsh Corgi…. a big one! Our session was unique as it doubled as both Dog and Maternity photos. Their mom is due in a couple months, and they wanted some photos to remember their family as it is now, before it grows. Thanks for a great session guys!

German Shorthair, Barley, came into the studio to get some photos done as a gift (one of my favorite things!) He’s handsome and sleek, and will make an awesome wedding gift for his mom!

My clients continue to amaze me with their enthusiasm, their gratitude and their generosity. It feels so good to create something beautiful that makes people happy, that they want to show all their friends, that makes them cry. Occasionally, I get the chance to be on the receiving end of that beauty, and it blows me away each time.

I recently received gifts from both Gertie’s mom and Milou’s (and Grendel’s and Elroy’s) mom, and it seriously fills my heart. Ginger gave me some yummy smelling lotion and fabulous earrings, handmade by her friend, and Lori handmade me a funky awesome necklace filled with things that represent me and what I do.

And a note to all my past, present and future clients: Thank you all SO much for trusting me to capture distinctive, artful images of your loved ones; for welcoming me into your homes, and spreading the word about my business. I love each and every one of you :)

lukas :: pet project rescue

The lovely Maia, of Pet Project Rescue, contacted me a while back about helping out with a photo project. They took in a very sad-looking German Shepherd who needed a lot of help to get better and get adopted. The idea is to photograph Lukas every two weeks while he recovers, until he finds his forever home. When I met him, I couldn’t believe what a sweet, kind boy he is. He’s had a horrible life until now, but his eyes are bright and filled with gratitude and love. Here’s his story, copied directly from the Pet Project Rescue site:

Lukas found himself scared and alone in a local animal control. At first glance we thought he was an elderly dog at the end of his life, and we could not bear the idea of him dying alone in a strange place. As it turns out he is just 2-3 years old, but life had been unkind to him which made him look much older. Day after day we would visit him all the while trying to figure out how we could rescue him.

One day, at animal control, we crossed paths with a stranger that had taken to Lukas. She specialized in hospice care for dogs. It just seemed too perfect to be true, but like everyone that meets Lukas, she wanted to help him…and right then we had a foster for Lukas! We were so thrilled that we arranged to pick him up the very next day.

He went right to the vet, and began a number of tests, one of which was for Lupus, an autoimmune disorder. Lukas was 15 lbs under weight, and had damage to the bones in his legs due to malnutrition as a result of neglect. He had skin lesions on his tail, shoulders, face, and nose. Lukas was cleaned up, started a very healthy diet, and begin his much needed medical treatment. At this time he has tested negative for Lupus, but we will follow up with additional tests to be 100% sure once he is stronger.

We have high hopes for Lukas and are so thrilled that we were able to give him a warm and loving home after years of neglect. We will keep all Lukas’ supporters up-to-date on his progress on this page and our Facebook Fan Page: www.facebook.com/PetProjectRescue.

Lukas will be looking for his forever home once we have determined his medical issues are stable and his medication is working properly.
