Pet Project Rescue was started in response to the needs of street dogs on Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Many of these dogs live in desperate conditions, where they have to fight to stay alive each day on the street. While visiting Isla Mujeres many years ago, Maia and her husband, Matt, met Allison, who runs Isla Animals Rescue. They became aware of the great need in that area, adopted a dog from Allison, and started a rescue of their own back in Minnesota.
Pet Project is very active in the local pet rescue world, but their heart still lies in Mexico. Maia frequently visits the area to help with spay and neuter clinics and to transport dogs to the states where they have the opportunity to find loving, forever homes. They are a foster-based rescue, and are always looking for more people to foster the many dogs and cats that come through. All of the cats they rescue are from local, high-kill shelters, and many of the dogs are from puppy mill situations.
Maia is an extremely dedicated, genuine person, and had put her whole life into this effort. I’m excited to help in any way I can, and am proud to be giving 10% of my session fees in September to this great organization!
This handsome, adoptable guy is Alberto, or “Bert” for short. He’s from Mexico, and has been looking for a home for a long time. He’s super sweet, about 2 years old, and most likely a Bull Terrier/Sher Pei/Lab mix. His eyes are definitely Bull Terrier, and his awesome curly tail is definitely Shar Pei! His fosters say he’s a huge couch potato, and when he’s especially happy, he “smiles” with his teeth and army crawls on the floor. Oh, and did I mention he’s handsome? I love kittens. Always have. If it weren’t for the litter box situation, I’d totally be a crazy cat lady. These two fuzzy-kins, along with about 10 other kittens, were just pulled from the pound. Piglet is the tabby, and he was an orphan. Goose’s (the grey one’s) mom took him in as her own, and has been taking great care of him and her 5 other babies. Two mama cats and their 2 litters will be available for adoption in a couple of weeks. I don’t know what we did to get them to sit still, but these guys stared at me for about 10 seconds like this…. hilarious.
