inca :: joy session

This gorgeous Rottweiler just turned 5, and she has Lymphoma. She wasn’t doing well on chemo, so they stopped treatment, and she’s been feeling much better. She was very excited to show me her toys when I got to her house  :)

Inca is one of the best-trained dogs I’ve had the pleasure to photograph, and she was a sweet, gentle snuggle-bunny. You’ll see some shave-marks on her legs from the vet, and she tired out pretty quickly when we took her outside, but other than that, you’d have no idea she was sick. Lots of love to Inca and her family.

This is her best friend, Ralphie, who came over show his support…. and get slobbered on.

This is one very loved dog.

marissa - I love these sessions that you do, for someone that loves their dog so much, there could be no better gift than something like this. However, as much as I love these sessions, they break my heart (I am really on the verge of tears) because it makes me think about my Chevy and how much I would miss her if she were gone and how much love and joy she brings to my life.
A few weeks ago she turned 3 and I realized, my baby is not a puppy anymore and I got sad.
Thank you for sharing this families heart and thank you for reminding me to appreciate the days I have with Chevy.March 11, 2010 – 8:36 pm

Kimberly - First off – GORGEOUS dog!!! When I saw the first picture, my heart melted and by the end I was in love. I want to go out and adopt a dog today. I love photo of half her face. What a creative idea. That one and the first one would be hanging on my wall.

tommy + sugar = houndy fun!

Both Tommy and Sugar are rescues from Greyhound Pets of America, and I was super excited to have them in the studio for the February Rescue of the Month! Tommy is the big brindle boy, and Sugar is his little sister. Greyhounds can be so hilarious and and strange and beautiful…. it always makes me happy when I get to photograph them. They never disappoint.

Yes, she’s standing underneath him, and yes, she walked there of her own accord. I’m telling you…. hilarious  :)

kirby :: minneapolis bulldog photographer

I’ve had lots of breed “firsts” in the studio lately, and Kirby was the first Bulldog that’s come over. He’s everything a Bulldog should be: wrinkly, slobbery, snuffly, happy, stubborn and oh-so-adorable! Between the tongue, the underbite, the smiles and the pleading eyes, this guy wins for most expressions, hands-down. I had tons of fun shooting him, and he had tons of fun eating treats and trying to “love up” my leg. Sorry buddy, no humping the photographer.

Matt - That’s my boy! Great job, Sarah. You got talent. :) March 9, 2010 – 2:57 am

mk - Even as a photographer and a pet lover, I’m still awed by the way you can capture the personality of all these animals so wonderfully. You have a truly unique talent and that is something that can never be taken from you, regardless of the liberties others may be taking with your words or ideas. It’s obvious that you have a loving and giving heart and despite what it may seem at times, you can’t be punished for that. Keep on keepin’ on, my friend. :) March 8, 2010 – 1:22 am

Dustin - Kirby is pretty effing cute.March 7, 2010 – 7:45 pm

Annie - I LOOOOVE Bulldogs. They are a fantastic breed.March 7, 2010 – 7:38 pm

morrison + xerxes :: minneapolis dog photographer

Morrison the Shiba Inu and his little {big} brother Xerxes the Vizsla {Xerk for short} had a great time in the studio last week! I’d never shot a Shiba before, and got a good taste of their calm, yet stubborn personalities. Xerk, in good Vizsla style, was sleek, handsome and a little goofy. It was tough to pick my favorites from this session; there were a lot of good ones. Just look at this expression!

Foxy…

Thanks for a great session, boys!

Kimberly - I love Shibas. They’re such calm sweet dogs. Beautiful photos. I love how different the dogs are and the happy pic of the two of them is my favorite.March 6, 2010 – 12:19 am

Emily - The photos turned out great! We just love the pictures and had so much fun looking through them!March 5, 2010 – 11:31 pm

update :: giving back in 2010

With any new idea, you live and learn, see what people like, and adapt and change the idea to be even better than the original idea!

To make Giving Back in 2010 more all-inclusive, I’m changing the system a bit. Now, rather than having to adopt from a Rescue of the Month during their month, you can get a 50% off session if you’ve ever adopted from that rescue! So, this month is Red Lake Rosie Rescue. If you’ve ever adopted from RLRR, get 50% off all through the month of March!

Another aspect I’m excited about, is extending discounts to all rescues, even if they’re not a Rescue of the Month. Have you adopted an animal from a rescue that’s not on my list? No problem! Just for supporting rescues in general, you’ll get 20% off your session! How cool is that??

Hopefully this new system will be simpler and more accessible for more people. I want Giving Back to be a wonderful opportunity for anyone, not just a select few. And, of course, I’m open to change, so if you have a suggestion to make this program even better, I’m excited to hear it!

For a list of Rescues participating in 2010, and a little more info on the program, click here!

And, to make it fair for everyone, if you’ve adopted from the January or February Rescue of the Month, you’re still eligible to get 50% off a session, just contact me  :)

Lisa LaVerdiere for Home for Life - Hi Sarah: thank you for helping so many of the area rescue groups with this generous and brilliant idea! Would you consider extending your kind offer to SPONSORS of Home for Life animals? these kind people help Home for Life provide loving lifetime care for special needs cats and dogs who cannot find adoptive homes.Home for Life is one of the only care for life sanctuaries in the country that will help anmals who cannot be adopted. I would love to see the supporters who make it possible for us to help these special cats and dogs have the opportunity to benefit from the discount for your pet portraits. let us know and we will publicize! did you know your program is already on our Animal Updates page on our website!? thanks again Lisa@HFLMarch 5, 2010 – 11:14 pm

march rescue of the month :: red lake rosie’s rescue

“The health of a nation can be determined by how it cares for its animals”

I’m proud to be donating 10% of all Pet Session fees in March to Red Lake Rosie. The Red Lake Indian Reservation is located in north central Minnesota in portions of Clearwater and Beltrami Counties. The Red Lake Tribe has land holdings of 837,736 acres which is about the size of the State of Rhode Island. Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue, Inc. began in 2004 by a group of volunteers on the Red Lake Reservation in northwestern Minnesota who were concerned about domestic animals and their care in their nation. According to oral tradition the Ojibwe, the Anishinabe had a very special connection to maheengun, or the wolf. Original man walked across the North American continent long ago with maheengun by his side. After their journey together as brothers, they parted their ways. What would happen to the wolf would surely happen to the Anishinabe. The Anishinabe were always to regard the ancestor of the wolf, animoosh or dog as a friend. Red Lake Rosie reminds the Anishinabe to keep their covenant with maheengun.

RLRR works with many rescues and shelters here in the Twin Cities to get the animals healthy and adopted. To date, RLRR has rehomed over 2,000 animals. You can read more about the wonderful work these people are doing, and the dogs and cats they are helping on the RLRR Blog.

Local vets and shelters are holding a spay/neuter clinic in Red Lake from March 11th-13th, and I’m very excited to be going along! I’ll be documenting the clinic, the animals, and the RLRR shelter, and helping out where I can. These clinics are held a few times each year, giving the Red Lake residents’ animals vaccinations and spay/neuters, and hopefully educating people about caring for their pets. Look for this very special photo project on my blog towards the end of March.

If you have ever adopted a RLRR animal, you can get $25 off your next session with Sarah Beth Photography. If you adopt during the month of March, you’ll receive 50% off your session! Please contact me for more details.

I had the pleasure of meeting RLRR dogs, Teddy and Orlando, at the studio last week. This is Teddy, a happy-go-lucky little wookie.

And this BIG handsome boy is Orlando. He was pretty nervous about the studio, but warmed up to me quickly. I definitely felt a connection with him, and with some work on his confidence, I know he’ll make an amazing addition to the right family!

RLRR is always in need of people to transport animals down to the Twin Cities, for people to foster, to adopt, and of course to give tax deductible donations. They are a volunteer organization with many needs for food, blankets, portable pet carriers/crates, wire kennels for temporary shelter, dog houses, straw and cedar chips for bedding, food, medicine, and veterinarian fees.

If you’d like more information on how you can help Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue, please email animalrescue@redlakerosie.org

Nate - Wow Sarah…you are really making me think hard about getting Teddy. Him and Chloe look like they could be great pals.March 3, 2010 – 11:45 pm

Rebecca - Sarah–this moving image style seems similar to your still image style so I though you might enjoy it:

benjamin :: german shorthair pointer :: minneapolis dog photographer

Remember our Collie friend, Cody? That lucky boy got a new little brother for Valentine’s Day! Both Cody and Benjamin were rescued from the Animal Humane Society {go rescues!} and I hear they’re getting along great. Benjamin is a gorgeous 12 week old German Shorthair with more spunk than any one puppy should be allowed. I thought that he had two different colored eyes, but it turns out he’s actually blind in his right eye. The pupil never developed properly, and the iris did weird things, resulting in a pretty rad-looking peeper.

Our session was crazy-fun, with me frantically clicking away in between puppy tackles and kisses. Puppy sessions are definitely a challenge, but one that I’m always excited to take on. We ended up with some funny compositions, crazy eyes and ears, and blurry messes when he was running at me, but we got lots of great ones, too. Here’s a couple of my faves….

Is this not the cutest bum you’ve ever seen?

Claire - LOVE that background color! such a cute pup, too :) March 3, 2010 – 7:18 pm

is it spring yet?

My wonderful Dustin got me these tulips {one of my favorite flowers} for Valentine’s Day last week! The next morning they were opened up and the sun was shining, and I just had to get some photos. It feels good to look at these now that they’ve dried up and it’s dark outside. Just a little respite from winter until the *real* spring comes….

melissa oholendt - What a good guy you have. :) March 2, 2010 – 3:28 pm

Meredeth - My fella got me tulips for Valentine’s Day, too! Multi-colored, though, and he pointed out that he double-checked that they put yellow in there. The yellow ones totally made the bouquet.February 22, 2010 – 2:03 pm

pixie round two | minneapolis dog photography

Remember cute little Pixie from her Studio session a while back? We had the outdoor part our Combo session last week {after a couple of weather reschedules} and it was awesome! I’ve never seen a dog so little be SO excited about snow! She loved it. We had a gorgeous sunny day and found a wetland area with no other tracks, which made for a perfect glistening blanket of snow. Although winter can get pretty long and dreary in Minnesota, it can also be quite beautiful, and I really encourage clients to get out there in it. With the right day, fresh snow, and a dog who loves it, you’ll have some incredible images you can’t get any other time of year  :)

boing…boing…boing…

Pixie and her mom have a beautiful bond.

alexa - How cute she is! Love the series of her hopping through the snow!February 19, 2010 – 5:07 pm

marissa - I LOVE the jumping series. I can only ever get my dog to run toward me (and I get black eyes from getting hit) or away from me (which creates not so attractive butt shots), so I think those are great, specially the last one where she disappears into the snow.February 18, 2010 – 9:55 pm

Lysandra - What fun pictures! Love it!February 18, 2010 – 1:39 am

Kimberly - This is fantastic. So sweet.February 17, 2010 – 11:51 pm

Shauna (Fido & Wino) - That first photo is hilarious- that pup is on a MISSION :) February 17, 2010 – 11:21 pm

Allison - Awesome! Love the “boing” series!!February 17, 2010 – 11:04 pm

stacey - too cute! i was in my hometown in december (right by la crosse, wi) and got to take some pics of my sister’s dogs out in the snow and it was AMAZING. i loved it – such pretty light!!! so i guess you get SOMETHING in exchange for that weather.. ;) what a happy, cutie dog!February 17, 2010 – 3:58 pm
